Big Bear Discovery Center

The Discovery Center in Big Bear is the Outdoor Educational Center for the entire San Bernardino National Forest located on the North Shore of Big Bear Lake, Ca.



Located within the Discovery Center Property is the 2,700 sq/ft Adventure Outpost loaded with everything you will need before heading out into the National Forest. The Adventure Outpost has the Very Best Selection in the entire Big Bear Valley of books about camping, biking, hiking, four wheeling and of course skiing. They also carry several different types of maps for every outdoor activity throughout Big Bear Lake. There is also one of the biggest collections of souvenir's for Big Bear and the surrounding Mountains.

A good idea before heading out into the Mountains to make sure you have your current Outdoor Adventure Pass which can also be purchased at the Discovery Center if needed.

It's not uncommon to run into hikers and backpackers that are hiking on the Pacific Crest Trail which crosses right through the Big Bear Valley. The pacific coast trail runs from the Mexican border due West for 2,650 miles all the way to Canada.

Just a few of the things the Discovery Center offers is Adventure Passes, Hiking and Trail Maps, Forest Road Maps, Camping Information and Permits as we'll as customized Group Tours back into the National Forest.

Depending on when you Visit Big Bear Lake, the Discovery Center offers a variety of Guided Tours for your Family to enjoy. Choose anything from a half hour Nature walk and learn about the native plants and Wildlife in the Valley, or Hiking up to the Top of the Famous Butler Peak Fire Lookout with spectacular views of the San Bernardo National Forest.


Or perhaps your visiting Big Bear around Christmas time when the Bald Eagles migrate to Big Bear for the Winter and would like to go on a 2 hour guided Bald Eagle Guided Tour where they take you to known nesting areas around the Lake.

Or maybe head way back in the Wilderness during the Winter time with Discovery Center Snowshoeing guided tours which includes the snowshoes and transportation.

The Big Bear Discovery Center also has an Outdoor Amphitheater which host's several Outdoor Concerts and Jazz Festivals throughout the Summer. It's a good idea to reserve your tickets early or you can obtain a Season Pass for the Amphitheater Here.
